What is a rotary cutter?  It's a round razor blade on a wheel and looks a little like a pizza cutter.  But you won't be cutting pizza!  You'll be cutting fabric (often several layers at once) and creating some wonderful quilts as a result.  Come learn about different cutters, rulers, and mat boards, safety features and basics of cutting fabric strips, squares, rectangles and triangles.

BINDING A QUILT

DOUBLE IRISH CHAIN

Although you won’t finish this quilt in one day, Eleanor Burns (of Quilt-in-a-Day fame) makes this complex-looking quilt simple. Cutting and assembling the fabrics in strip sets makes the chain pattern come together beautifully.   Double Irish Chain is a great quilt for beginners.  The workshop offers detailed instructions and personal attention to help you make an intricate looking, but simple quilt in three colors—a light, a medium, and a dark.

SHOW ME HOW TO PAPER PIECE

Machine paper piecing is a method that allows you to create accurate patchwork blocks quickly and easily.  You simply cut oversize fabric pieces and sew them in sequence to a paper foundation.  This workshop will show you how to machine paper piece, step by step, using the book, Show Me How to Paper Piece, by Carol Doak.  You will learn the basics by making a mini quilt using a variety of patterns.  Even if you have never made a piece of patchwork before, you can make wonderful blocks the first time you try machine paper piecing.

PEPPERMINT TWIST

Select just two fabrics―a light and a dark―to make this super-simple, but stunning, two-color quilt.  Peppermint Twist uses some basic machine piecing techniques with a "twist."

Guest teacher, Shirley Slauenwhite, of St. Croix International Quilters' Guild teaches this class developed by Maine's own Bethany Reynolds.  Stack-N-Whack is an easy way to create quilt blocks with unique kaleidoscope designs.  These designs require a set of identical pieces cut from a large-print fabric.  Rather than finding and cutting each piece individually, learn how to layer and cut a number of identical print strips to make a stack.  Each diamond cut from the stack produces a star kit--a set of identical pieces that will create a kaleidoscope effect for one block.

QUILT-AS-YOU-GO STAINED GLASS

Brenda Henning of Bear Paw Productions designed this streamlined stained glass technique using fusible bias tape.  In this method, the pieces of the design are cut and placed on a marked background fabric.  All the raw edges fit together like a jig-saw puzzle and are covered by bias tape.  The project is then quilted as the bias "leading" is machine stitched.

Eight different patterns are available for this class (see left).   Choose the one you like and start gathering fabricthis is a great chance to use all the batik and hand-dyed fabrics you've been saving for something "special!"

This quilt was designed by Atkinson Designs the same folks who developed Yellow Brick Road that was such a hit in classes last year.  Minnesota Hot Dish is “fat-quarter friendly” and can be made with fabrics from your stash—the more fabrics you use the scrappier your quilt will be.  Use one light fabric (either solid or tone-on-tone) for the background to blend everything together.  This scrappy quilt is framed by an easy “piano keys” border.

This tree skirt was designed by Cheryl Phillips and is featured in her book, Quilts Without Corners.  Compared to traditional quilting methods, the patterns in this book are quick and simple to make.
