A breathtaking view from the choir loft

ST. JOHN'S 2007 BIENNIAL QUILT SHOW
(held in odd-numbered years)
Sponsored by St. John the Evangelist Church

"Visitors to the 2007 St. John Quilt Show [the first weekend in August] had two days to savor the dozens of handcrafted bedcovers and wall hangings that were displayed on the walls, pews, altar and railings of the 150-year-old church.  The steady stream of quilt lovers who attended the event strolled the aisles, ascended the steep steps to the choir loft for a bird's-eye view of the colorful profusion, sampled the delicate homemade pastries and cool drinks in the gathering room behind the altar, and pondered their favorites in a vote for People's Choice awards to the most popular quilts."

Secret Garden raffle quilt to benefit the Church

The altar was adorned with antique and vintage quilts.

First place People's Choice was awarded to the "Pinwheel" quilt (hanging behind the altar) made with 1930s reproduction fabrics.  The quilt was made in 2006 by members of St. Croix International Quilters' Guild as a raffle to benefit the Ronald McDonald House.  Teresa Porter of Calais, who won the quilt, lent it for display.

Carolyn Nadeau of Perry won the second-place ribbon for her "Autumn in Maine" quilt
(hanging on the right) made of hand-dyed fabrics.

In third place, "Town and Country" a sampler quilt (hanging in the center)
made by Sandra Hill of Calais won voters' approval.

Quilting teacher Bonnie Hunter was kept busy during the show demonstrating Quilt-As-You-Go Stained Glass techniques.  Here she shows the back of a stained glass sample after it is quilted.

Our next Quilt Show will be held in 2009; date TBA.

See you then...

We're always looking for new quilts to display; if you have a quilt you
